Barbarians of Old: Defend Our Cause!
Regarded as some of the fiercest warriors ever known, the barbarians which originated from ancient Scandinavia struck terror into the hearts of all those met on the battlefield. Brandishing battle axes, spiked clubs, and spears, the barbarians were a terrifying foe that prevented foreign military forces from entering the region with their reputation alone. Despite the perception of being savages, those barbarians often had complex tribal societies with hierarchies based on respect and honor. But to outsiders, the barbarians seemed to be driven only by rage. This held true in battle, with barbarians demonstrating a form of madness that would come to be known as berserking. Berserkers were the fiercest warriors on the battlefield, and were believed to fight in an uncontrollable trance of fury.
Barbarians were even believed to have supernatural powers that allowed them to take on the forms of animals including wolves and bears. Wielding their battle axes and charging into battle, a berserking barbarian was a terrifying sight that would be passed down into legend amongst various European cultures. While the days of the barbarians are long passed, you can still find collectible battle axes and other memorabilia that is reminiscent of the period.
