A Brief History of the Knights Templar
The Knights Templar was an organization of Christian militia that was prominent during the 12th and 13th centuries and was founded in order to protect Christian civilians. After the First Crusade, many pilgrims were slaughtered by bandits throughout the Jerusalem area. In order to protect these people, King Baldwin II agreed to allow a new group of knights to be headquartered in the Temple Mount: the Knights Templar.
The Order quickly grew and played a crucial role in many of the key battles during the ensuing Crusades. Although founded on military principles, many of the members didn’t wield Knights Templar swords and had a more political role in the organization. As the Crusaders lost their stronghold in the Holy Land, the Knights Templar also fell from prominence.
