Childhood Memories Revisited

american ninjaWhen I was a kid, one of my favorite movies was “American Ninja.” The movie is about a boy who was adopted by a Filipino man and shown the way of the Ninja. One of the weapons that the titular hero had was throwing stars to battle the enemies with ninja swords and daggers. “American Ninja” inspired me to take up martial arts and now I teach a self defense class for women and children at a local community center in my town.  Whenever I speak to my students about my inspiration, I always go back to that movie.

Earlier this week, they presented me with a thank you plaque with the movie poster framed and throwing stars in a glass case. It was a very sweet gesture and I can’t help but think that a dream of mine – to be a skilled martial artist and someone who helps people for a living – was spawned by a movie.

throwing starThe throwing star was popularized in the Japanese feudal era as a choice weapon of assassins known to most people as “ninjas”. In Japanese, throwing stars are called shuriken, pronounced “Shoe-Ree-Ken”.  These ranged weapons were utilized to inflict wounds and for discreet kills from a short distance. Most people think that shuriken are thrown much like a baseball, but in actual practice, a stack of shuriken was placed in the palm of the hand, and the stars then slid off the palm by the opposite hand, sending them slicing at a sideways angle through the air.

In Japan, the art of the ninja is still practiced in various locations throughout the country, though it is not used for assassinations as it once was in feudal Japan. And you can even find authentic stainless steel throwing stars from online retailers.

One of the many weapons used by the Samurai was the throwing star, also known as Shurikan (which means “sword hidden in the hand”). Most of the time the throwing stars were flat circular disks, with a number of razor-sharp points and blades.

The martial arts throwing stars were not the primary weapon for the Samurai, but it was easy to carry and conceal, and it had a distinct advantage for being able to use at a distance. They were a very quiet and effective weapon when needed.
