Barbarians of Old: Defend Our Cause!
Regarded as some of the fiercest warriors ever known, the barbarians which originated from ancient Scandinavia struck terror into the hearts of all those met on the battlefield. Brandishing battle axes, spiked clubs, and spears, the barbarians were a terrifying foe that prevented foreign military forces from entering the region with their reputation alone. Despite the perception of being savages, those barbarians often had complex tribal societies with hierarchies based on respect and honor. But to outsiders, the barbarians seemed to be driven only by rage. This held true in battle, with barbarians demonstrating a form of madness that would come to be known as berserking. Berserkers were the fiercest warriors on the battlefield, and were believed to fight in an uncontrollable trance of fury.
Barbarians were even believed to have supernatural powers that allowed them to take on the forms of animals including wolves and bears. Wielding their battle axes and charging into battle, a berserking barbarian was a terrifying sight that would be passed down into legend amongst various European cultures. While the days of the barbarians are long passed, you can still find collectible battle axes and other memorabilia that is reminiscent of the period.

Viking Swords at Vikings Games
For the last several years the Minnesota Vikings have been associated with mediocrity in the NFL, but they have experienced resurgence this year thanks in large part to some new talent. Last year’s first round draft pick Adrian Peterson and the acquisition of veteran quarterback Brett Favre has equated to a drastic increase in the team’s record. This has correlated to increased TV time.
The past several weeks I have viewed Vikings games, and their fans appear to be stirred by the team’s success and eager to show their support. There are always several fans clad in full Viking garb, many even wielding authentic Viking swords. Although I am not a Vikings fan, it is exciting to see a revival of one of the league’s oldest teams.
A Brief History of the Knights Templar
The Knights Templar was an organization of Christian militia that was prominent during the 12th and 13th centuries and was founded in order to protect Christian civilians. After the First Crusade, many pilgrims were slaughtered by bandits throughout the Jerusalem area. In order to protect these people, King Baldwin II agreed to allow a new group of knights to be headquartered in the Temple Mount: the Knights Templar.
The Order quickly grew and played a crucial role in many of the key battles during the ensuing Crusades. Although founded on military principles, many of the members didn’t wield Knights Templar swords and had a more political role in the organization. As the Crusaders lost their stronghold in the Holy Land, the Knights Templar also fell from prominence.
The Vikings’ Reign of Terror
Thomas Hobbes famously wrote that the lives of men during the Middle Ages were “nasty, brutish and short.” While that may have been true of peasants populating the European countryside, it didn’t necessarily apply to the Vikings. These fearsome warriors utilized barbarous violence, sneak attacks and sailing expertise to relieve Europeans of their treasure. The Vikings’ talent for plunder was unparalleled.
English kings and land barons eventually built highly fortified castles to keep Vikings out, but no city or town within a day’s march of water was safe. Viking ships were designed for use in deep or shallow water, allowing them to sail up a river with ease and quickness. Many Europeans died by the Viking sword in the 11th century. The invaders even made journeys to the New World long before Columbus or any other European explorer.
